POLAR INVESTIGATIONS: ANTARCTICA - 2013, 2015

I first encountered The Falklands, South Georgia Island and the Antarctic Peninsula in January 2013. Such otherworldly wonders demanded more looking. Fortunately I was invited to return under the auspices of the nonprofit Students on Ice with 23 other educators and 66 students, from December 28, 2014 to January 7, 2015. Most of the images in this portfolio are taken from those experiences sailing from Ushuaia in Terra Del Fuego first to the Falklands with landings at Carcass and Saunders, then on to South Georgia Island, landing in the old whaling town of Grytviken where Shackleton is buried. That historical touchstone was enhanced with landings on Elephant Island and Point Wilde. Aside from the monumental bergs and coastlines of glaciers and rock I also was captivated by the abandoned remains of a 19th century whaling station on Deception Island. Most images were taken along the Antarctic Peninsula from the ship's deck and many Zodiac excursions from as far south as Pleneau Island at the 65th Latitude.
